MAUREEN H. FITZGERALD

RN, BIS, MA, PhD

I am a medical anthropologist with a MA (1985) and PhD (1989) from the University of Hawai’i and an undergraduate degree from George Mason University in Virginia (1982) in anthropology. I also have a RN from Millard Fillmore Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, New York and roughly 20 years of nursing experience as a staff nurse and Head Nurse in a variety of areas, including critical care (Emergency Department and Intensive Care), medical/surgical, and rehabilitation nursing. I recently retired after 14 years in the School of Occupation and Leisure Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney (basically the School is an OT school that also includes a leisure and health degree program).

One of my primary roles in the School was as a supervisor for research students and a mentor for less experienced staff and other health professionals. I also taught research related subjects. I have a wide range of research interests (fortunately given the context in which I worked and the interests and backgrounds of my students and colleagues). This included areas like intercultural interactions in health care, culture and mental health (I have been affiliated with the Transcultural Mental Health Centre where I have been a Co-Chair of the Research Subcommittee and the Diversity Health Institute), and culture and disability.

Thus I have been a researcher for more than 20 years and have supervised and mentored research with a range of students and health professionals, many of whom work with people from sensitive or vulnerable populations and use research methods and methodologies from a wide range of research paradigms. I have more than 80 professional publications, including books and refereed journal articles, and more than 100 professional presentations. The publications include several on the research ethics-review process.
